My chosen portrait photography

Nick Suarez 5600 800 Portrait Photography by Nick Suarez
Why have I chosen this photograph?
The reason why I chose this photograph is because its very simple. I like the fact that the model is looking straight at the camera instensly  and the black and white effect creates a more dramatic feel as well as an a classic look. The camera is not focusing on anything else but the model only and is very focused on her expressions and body language which is why her clothes and hair are very basic so it encourages the viewer to look at her face even more. I would think that this photograph is used for professional high end fashion because of its sleek, shiny, smooth texture.

Lighting and setting
Due to the fact that the models face is very bright and subtle, the light is facing towards her creating a soft lighting technique with a plain background. It looks like a clam-shell technique was used in this photo because the models face looks very bright. The photographer used the rules of thirds in order to keep her focused including her eyes (which are the guidelines to any portrait photography.).

how will you re-create it ?
I will re-create this photograph by taking a tripod, camera and a friend (who is willing to model for me) to help me create this footage. I will be using the college's TV studio with the model standing in front of a plain background. Using the clam-shell lighting technique, I will use this and create a similar portrait to the original footage that I'm trying to refurbish. The subject won't have to wear any costume.

Light Graffiti photography

Light graffiti ( or Light painting) is a photographic technique that exposes are made by hand-held moving light sources. Light graffiti is often used at events or special occasions where its dark and very little light is present.

Step 1. To create a Light graffiti photography, you must first get a glow stick, torch or anything that displays light on it and a tripod.

Step 2. With your tripod, glow stick or torch, go to a dark room and set up your tripod.

Step 3. Next, you set your camera to manual mode if its a DSLR, and set the shutter speed to 30 seconds, set your ISO to one hundred and your aperture (f/stop) to 5.6.
(like the picture below)

Step 4. Face the torch, glow stick etc to the camera lens and start writing!

Different Lighting techniques (Portrait photography) Unit 53

Light
Hard light is when the light is shinning in one direction of the subject which results to one side of the subject being really bright and the other side really dark. soft light is when the light wraps around the subject and diffuses the shadow a more ''softer'' look.
A soft box describes an enclosure that surrounds all light source and diffuses the light that escapes from it. A clam shot is when the light is facing towards the model and place the reflector underneath the model's chin to create a brighter photograph, this is often used in beauty and cosmetic use. What I like about the clam shell lighting is that it makes the subject look brighter and more youthful.

Strong Directional Lighting
This type of light usually seen outdoors when the sun is out and is coming in one particular angle. Photos of sunrise and sunsets are a good example of a directional light because the light is coming from one angle which creates a relaxed, warm and carefree feeling.

What is rim lighting?
Rim lighting, which is sometimes referred to as back light is when the subject is placed in front of the light and you can see a light outline of the subject. This technique pulls the subject off the background and creates some depth and dimension to what you are shooting.

Job Roles
Group decided to split the class into 3 groups. (One group does the title sequence while the other two groups does the inserts) We discussed and assigned everyone to their roles.
We took a tour around the college and took notes of what the four faculties are.
-          Suggested some ideas
-          Prepared a list of questions to ask our clients.
Took notes of our ideas and created a list of questions to ask the client.
Meeting the client
Client comes in to give more details about the event. She tells us what she wants for the event and we asked questions as well as give suggestions on what we should do for the event and if we are permitted to use any of the college’s facilities. (E.g. room availability, Equipment’s available.)
Took notes of what the client wanted from us.
Confirming with the client
Client comes in at 3:30pm to confirm the ideas and suggestions. We wanted to create a minute montage, or 2-3 minutes with voiceover interviews. The title sequence covers the students and the things they interact with. As a class we decided to have a pre-screening to show to David (Client) and see what he thinks. With the music the client wants a track that reflects the scene and tempo of the visuals (Lyrics must be related to the visuals as well).
We suggested closing credits at the end of the show and highlights.
Ran through our groups and roles of the production.
Prepared some questions before confirming anything with the client.
After meeting with the client, we got into groups (some of us individual work) and began to plan our inserts, sequences, music etc.

The Rule of Thirds

The rules of thirds is a guideline which applies to the process of composing visual images such as designs, films, paintings and photographs. The guideline proposes that an image should be divided into nine equal parts which is equally spaced in horizontal lines and vertical lines. along those lines and intersections creates more tension, energy and composition within the photo.

Step 1 - First, you must select your camera to ''Auto'' option under your camera's menu, change viewfinder to live and check your camera to be sure that it has a grid.

Step 2 - make sure the subject corresponds with the lighting in that area.

Step 3 - If your taking a portrait make sure that the eyes are aligned where the two lines meet or if your doing a landscape, be sure that the subject of your image is at the crosshatch whenever possible. (like the examples below)

Step 4 - Make sure that your subject is at the intersection and crosshatch's.

Panning Shot

Panning is a photographic technique when the photography wants to freeze the motion of moving objects. You can tell when a panning shot is taken of its design: the moving object is in sharp focus while the background is blurry.

Step 1: Make sure that your camera setting is on Manual mode (M) on the selection dial.

Step 2: adjusting the shutter speed is important. set your shutter speed to a lower speed that you would typically use, your shutter speed will depend on your subject and the speed that it is moving.
(Start out by setting up your speed at 1/30th)

Step 3You want to begin panning before you take the shots. This will ensure a smooth and even pan, which will give you a nice, sharp photograph. After you take the shots you want to continue the panning movement.

UNIT 5 : Working to a Brief

Notes for film presentation:

contractual brief
a brief that is fixed, not negotiable, once signed everything is done.
(example production manager)

negotiated
to reach with an agreement or compromise by discussion with others.
(example music video)

formal:
done in accordance with rules of convention or etiquette.

informal
not formal, having a relaxed, friendly and unofficial style manner.

commission
the act of granting certain powers or authority to carry out a particular task or duty.

tender
The production company might find out someone is looking for a video. They put together a brief with a proposal and a budget and send it to the potential client. The client would look at all the different tenders they receive and choose the one they prefer.

cooperative brief:
You work alongside other production companies or organisations who also have a brief therefore your brief has to co-operate with the brief they are working on as well

competition:
the activity or condition of competing for a prize or profit. for example, a rivalry between two businesses or more striving for the same market.

I took an example of a brief assignment and I analysed it to see what is essential. I highlighted and broken down the brief in a simple format to illustrate what the client wants.

Personal statement

Journalism is a representation of a social and cultural society expressed through the art of the English language. My passion for Journalism sparked through my interest for English, therefore I feel that this is the best route in order to utilise my strengths.

Throughout my studies in English literature and English language, I have used it as my progression to help me reach my desired career. Not only have I learnt how to use English language components but also, it has given me the ability to create my own style of writing. Through this, my interest for Journalism grew stronger when I began a course in BTEC Creative Media during my time at college, whilst attending a journalism course at ''T! Magazine'' for one week. This has helped me to expand my knowledge and skills which I have already accumulated through my GCSEs and allowed me to apply this to various media platforms.

During my time at college, I have accomplished the ability to learn to use the following software: Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Sony Vegas and TrackAxPC. This has encouraged me to become motivated to enhance my YouTube channel, which I am avidly willing to excel in. I had been fortunate enough to fulfil my work experience at Fleming Associates Radio PR in Oxford Circus. There, I had acquired the technique to develop both the basic and advanced researching skills, which has given me the confidence to contribute different creative suggestions to clients, artists and assisting staff at various promotional events for television and radio.

At secondary school, I was chosen to perform the important role of a prefect. Through this experience, I have been able to enhance my social skills to communicate with an audience of different cultural backgrounds as well as portraying a responsible role model for younger members of the school community. I also participated in a sports leadership programme for young children between the ages of 5 - 9 years every Thursday evening, assisting them with physical activities to strengthen their athletic skills. This has given me a strong sense of confidence in which I believe is an important element to accomplish the role of a journalist.

In my spare time, I enjoy numerous activities such as singing, music, travel, photography and yoga. Travel is one of my greatest interests; countries such as Thailand, Belgium, France, Wales and Florida has left me captivated and inspired by many different cultures around the world. Throughout my travelling experiences, this has enabled me to become much more adaptive and flexible of my surroundings which I believe is essential for a journalist.
The creation of my YouTube channel is one of the most intriguing activities I have encountered due to my experience of a large audience viewing my work and the receiving of positive feedback. This has motivated me not only to produce more videos but also to inspire my viewers to take pride in their opinions.

I believe that journalism will enforce one's power to change their outlook upon society through today’s influences of modern technology and communication which will be a great privilege for me to contribute to others in a positive attitude. From this venture, I would like to fulfil my aspiration to apply to universities, which will allow me to achieve my goal as a journalist and accept the challenges ahead.

Fashion VS. Wildlife photography

Task 1: Understand how media producers define audiences for their products

The movie 'Juno' is about a quirky, funny and optimistic teenage-mum who goes on an memorable journey of becoming a woman. She later decides to have an abortion and gives it away to a couple who was unable to conceive a child of their own. throughout her journey, the quirky pregnant teen soon realizes how little she knows about life.

The movie was predominately aimed at 'E' and 'D' categories in the NRS Social grade. In these categories most of the audiences are students, pensioners or low-payed workers.

In which case 'Juno' is mostly aimed for teenage girls, parents and maybe some professional workers as the characters who adopted Juno's baby reflects on the life of a professional and middle class lifestyle. The film posses a great drama, laughter and romance combined together with a hint of realism. The film gives a voice to all the young mums out there, helping them explain how life really is through their eyes allowing the viewers walk a mile in a pregnant girls life, they soon get an emotional-feel towards Juno and see who she really is rather than judge her for having a child at a really young age.

'' This was a great film, probably the best I've seen so far at the festival. Ellen Page gives a wonderful performance as Juno, convincingly portraying her as a real independent free spirit. Michael Cera was good and funny, although I occasionally had trouble divorcing his character from George-Michael Bluth. J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney did a nice turn as Juno's parents. Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman were great as the adoptive parents who, while seemingly the perfect suburban couple on the outside, have their own sets of issues on the inside. Bateman especially gave a great performance as Mark, who is worried about sacrificing his own dreams as he connects with Juno over a shared love of music and the reality of the baby sinks in. Pans Labyrinth

Pan Labyrinth is a foreign spanish film that tells us a historical story of the spanish army in 1944. We follow a life of a little girl who is sent along with her pregnant mother to live with her stepfather, a ruthless captain of the spanish army. During the night, she meets a fairy who leads her to a faun in the labyrinth and tells her she is the princess to another world. He sets her 3 tasks to complete in order to prove herself that she is the princess and will reunite with her real family.

Pans Labyrinth is like ''Alice in Wonderland'' but made for grown ups from age 18-34 years old. It contains a lot of horror, history and fantasy with a spellbinding story. This movie is for everyone mostly adults from any social class or ethnicity can enjoy, something relatable when everyone is living a harsh reality but can still escape to their own imaginations and fantasy. Pans Labyrinth really illustrated that well.

''Every now and then, a movie comes along that is so extraordinary -- so breathtaking in its artistic ambition, so technically accomplished, so morally expansive, so fully realized -- that it defies the usual critical blather. Just see it, you want to tell readers. See it, and celebrate that rare occasion when a director has the audacity to commit cinema.

Such is the case with "Pan's Labyrinth," Guillermo Del Toro's visionary parable that would mark the zenith of the 42-year-old filmmaker's career were he not still so young. A visually dazzling fairy tale set in Franco-era Spain, this meditation on the costs and limits of totalitarianism combines the Gothic fantasy that has been Del Toro's signature -- from his debut, "Cronos," through comic book adaptations such as "Blade II" and "Hellboy" -- with the themes and setting of his 2001 historical drama, "The Devil's Backbone." - Ann Hornday, Top Critic

In this stunning underwater adventure, with memorable characters, humor and heartfelt emotion, Finding Nemo follows the comedic and momentous journey of an overly protective clownfish named Marlin and his son Nemo who become separated in the Great Barrier Reef when Nemo is unexpectedly taken far from his ocean home and dumped into a fish tank in a dentist's office.

''Compared with, say, "Toy Story," this may not sound like the most remarkable premise for a movie. But the madly inventive folks at Pixar may just be the most dependable storytellers now working in Hollywood. The Wachowski brothers could learn a thing or two about suspense, economy, humor and pithy characterizations from the script by director Andrew Stanton, Bob Peterson and David Reynolds, which has the wit to dream up a 12-step program for sharks trying to kick their fish-devouring habits, and the ingenuity to have Marlin accompanied on his quest by a blue tang named Dory, whose eagerness to help is canceled out by her acute case of short-term memory loss. Ellen DeGeneres, hilarious and poignant, gives a tour de force reading.''  - David Ansen

Majority of the ''Finding Nemo'' audiences are aged 4+ years old and is also suitable for families. There are no inappropriate languages or sexual contents. The incredible life of the aquatic sea keeps the audience interested in the story and characters. The cast that featured in this film created their own unique personalities for the characters in ''Finding Nemo''  using their talents through expression and voice.
