Personal statement

Journalism is a representation of a social and cultural society expressed through the art of the English language. My passion for Journalism sparked through my interest for English, therefore I feel that this is the best route in order to utilise my strengths.

Throughout my studies in English literature and English language, I have used it as my progression to help me reach my desired career. Not only have I learnt how to use English language components but also, it has given me the ability to create my own style of writing. Through this, my interest for Journalism grew stronger when I began a course in BTEC Creative Media during my time at college, whilst attending a journalism course at ''T! Magazine'' for one week. This has helped me to expand my knowledge and skills which I have already accumulated through my GCSEs and allowed me to apply this to various media platforms.

During my time at college, I have accomplished the ability to learn to use the following software: Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Sony Vegas and TrackAxPC. This has encouraged me to become motivated to enhance my YouTube channel, which I am avidly willing to excel in. I had been fortunate enough to fulfil my work experience at Fleming Associates Radio PR in Oxford Circus. There, I had acquired the technique to develop both the basic and advanced researching skills, which has given me the confidence to contribute different creative suggestions to clients, artists and assisting staff at various promotional events for television and radio.

At secondary school, I was chosen to perform the important role of a prefect. Through this experience, I have been able to enhance my social skills to communicate with an audience of different cultural backgrounds as well as portraying a responsible role model for younger members of the school community. I also participated in a sports leadership programme for young children between the ages of 5 - 9 years every Thursday evening, assisting them with physical activities to strengthen their athletic skills. This has given me a strong sense of confidence in which I believe is an important element to accomplish the role of a journalist.

In my spare time, I enjoy numerous activities such as singing, music, travel, photography and yoga. Travel is one of my greatest interests; countries such as Thailand, Belgium, France, Wales and Florida has left me captivated and inspired by many different cultures around the world. Throughout my travelling experiences, this has enabled me to become much more adaptive and flexible of my surroundings which I believe is essential for a journalist.
The creation of my YouTube channel is one of the most intriguing activities I have encountered due to my experience of a large audience viewing my work and the receiving of positive feedback. This has motivated me not only to produce more videos but also to inspire my viewers to take pride in their opinions.

I believe that journalism will enforce one's power to change their outlook upon society through today’s influences of modern technology and communication which will be a great privilege for me to contribute to others in a positive attitude. From this venture, I would like to fulfil my aspiration to apply to universities, which will allow me to achieve my goal as a journalist and accept the challenges ahead.

Fashion VS. Wildlife photography

Task 1: Understand how media producers define audiences for their products

The movie 'Juno' is about a quirky, funny and optimistic teenage-mum who goes on an memorable journey of becoming a woman. She later decides to have an abortion and gives it away to a couple who was unable to conceive a child of their own. throughout her journey, the quirky pregnant teen soon realizes how little she knows about life.

The movie was predominately aimed at 'E' and 'D' categories in the NRS Social grade. In these categories most of the audiences are students, pensioners or low-payed workers.

In which case 'Juno' is mostly aimed for teenage girls, parents and maybe some professional workers as the characters who adopted Juno's baby reflects on the life of a professional and middle class lifestyle. The film posses a great drama, laughter and romance combined together with a hint of realism. The film gives a voice to all the young mums out there, helping them explain how life really is through their eyes allowing the viewers walk a mile in a pregnant girls life, they soon get an emotional-feel towards Juno and see who she really is rather than judge her for having a child at a really young age.

'' This was a great film, probably the best I've seen so far at the festival. Ellen Page gives a wonderful performance as Juno, convincingly portraying her as a real independent free spirit. Michael Cera was good and funny, although I occasionally had trouble divorcing his character from George-Michael Bluth. J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney did a nice turn as Juno's parents. Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman were great as the adoptive parents who, while seemingly the perfect suburban couple on the outside, have their own sets of issues on the inside. Bateman especially gave a great performance as Mark, who is worried about sacrificing his own dreams as he connects with Juno over a shared love of music and the reality of the baby sinks in. Pans Labyrinth

Pan Labyrinth is a foreign spanish film that tells us a historical story of the spanish army in 1944. We follow a life of a little girl who is sent along with her pregnant mother to live with her stepfather, a ruthless captain of the spanish army. During the night, she meets a fairy who leads her to a faun in the labyrinth and tells her she is the princess to another world. He sets her 3 tasks to complete in order to prove herself that she is the princess and will reunite with her real family.

Pans Labyrinth is like ''Alice in Wonderland'' but made for grown ups from age 18-34 years old. It contains a lot of horror, history and fantasy with a spellbinding story. This movie is for everyone mostly adults from any social class or ethnicity can enjoy, something relatable when everyone is living a harsh reality but can still escape to their own imaginations and fantasy. Pans Labyrinth really illustrated that well.

''Every now and then, a movie comes along that is so extraordinary -- so breathtaking in its artistic ambition, so technically accomplished, so morally expansive, so fully realized -- that it defies the usual critical blather. Just see it, you want to tell readers. See it, and celebrate that rare occasion when a director has the audacity to commit cinema.

Such is the case with "Pan's Labyrinth," Guillermo Del Toro's visionary parable that would mark the zenith of the 42-year-old filmmaker's career were he not still so young. A visually dazzling fairy tale set in Franco-era Spain, this meditation on the costs and limits of totalitarianism combines the Gothic fantasy that has been Del Toro's signature -- from his debut, "Cronos," through comic book adaptations such as "Blade II" and "Hellboy" -- with the themes and setting of his 2001 historical drama, "The Devil's Backbone." - Ann Hornday, Top Critic

In this stunning underwater adventure, with memorable characters, humor and heartfelt emotion, Finding Nemo follows the comedic and momentous journey of an overly protective clownfish named Marlin and his son Nemo who become separated in the Great Barrier Reef when Nemo is unexpectedly taken far from his ocean home and dumped into a fish tank in a dentist's office.

''Compared with, say, "Toy Story," this may not sound like the most remarkable premise for a movie. But the madly inventive folks at Pixar may just be the most dependable storytellers now working in Hollywood. The Wachowski brothers could learn a thing or two about suspense, economy, humor and pithy characterizations from the script by director Andrew Stanton, Bob Peterson and David Reynolds, which has the wit to dream up a 12-step program for sharks trying to kick their fish-devouring habits, and the ingenuity to have Marlin accompanied on his quest by a blue tang named Dory, whose eagerness to help is canceled out by her acute case of short-term memory loss. Ellen DeGeneres, hilarious and poignant, gives a tour de force reading.''  - David Ansen

Majority of the ''Finding Nemo'' audiences are aged 4+ years old and is also suitable for families. There are no inappropriate languages or sexual contents. The incredible life of the aquatic sea keeps the audience interested in the story and characters. The cast that featured in this film created their own unique personalities for the characters in ''Finding Nemo''  using their talents through expression and voice.

UNIT 23 : MULTI-CAMERA TECHNIQUES

UNIT 23 : MULTI-CAMERA TECHNIQUES
Multi-camera production is a method of shooting TV shows and Films where several cameras are used on set to record and broadcast a scene including Live programme formats such as: Sports events, Music concerts, games shows, chat shows and studio-based dramas. Multi-camera production offers a chance to record a scene quickly, unlike single camera production you would have to shoot a scene numerous times to get a variety of different camera shots and angles. As you can see from below, there is an example of a multi-camera format being used.

Advantages of Multi-Camera Production:

  • Doesn't take long to shoot because all cameras are recording.
  • Be able to see reactions and emotions from different angles.
  • You get a lot more scenes covered in a shorter amount of time whereas single-camera, you have to move the camera to get a variety of shots which results to a longer process of filming.

Disadvantages of Multi-Camera Production:
  • Takes longer to set up.
  • Its more expensive because you will be using more than one camera.
  • This technique would be more ideal for studio (indoor) shooting rather than outdoor.

180° rule

EastEnders Title.png

EastEnders is a British soap opera first broadcasted on BBC One on 19 Feb 1985. Its one of the UK's highest rated programmes according to BARB ratings and its known for its opening theme before every episode and its cycle of twisting drama. The show primarily focuses on British popular culture where they claim that they ''don't make life they reflect it'' and tries to be open about realistic situations such as homosexuality, rape, unemployment and racial prejudice. Based on market research by BBC commissioning in 2003, EastEnders is mostly watched by 60 - 74 year olds, closely followed by 45-59 year olds, both male and female.

EastEnders Scheduling
  • Monday: 8:00 - 8:30pm
  •  Tuesday: 7:30 - 8:00pm
  • Thursday: 7:30 - 8:00pm
  • Friday: 8:00 - 8:30pm
  • Sunday: 1pm - 3pm

This is a two-shot angle. Two-shots are usually good for establishing a relationship between two people, it could also involve a movement or action to demonstrate what is happening within the camera frame without getting distracted from their surroundings.

This is an over-the-shoulder shot (OSS) where the camera is placed behind the person who is looking at the subject. The person facing the subject usually occupy 1/3 of the frame.
This helps to establish the position of each person and get the feel of looking at one person's point of view. It's common to cut between these shots, alternating the view of different speakers. The blurry background helps the viewers to focus on the subjects and their relationship with each other.

This is a close-up shot where it creates a tension and mood of the characters leaving the viewers in suspense. The two characters are very well focused enforcing the viewers to focus on the characters instead of their environment.

'Friends'  comedy show is the longest multi-camera Sit com to ever show on TV. These Sit coms are usually filmed in a set in front of a live studio audience or in some cases film with a laughing track. Its defined as a sit com due to their 'third-wall' set up creating space for the audience, therefore always shot in multi-camera. The third-wall set means that the 180° rule is not broken where the camera is placed in front of the audience to capture different shots and angles including establishing shots to set the scene and where the action is happening, a close up or a medium shot to capture the actors/actresses expressions on their face and where they are situated on the set.

'Friends' History Broadcast
Note: The most frequent time slot for the series is in italic text.

  • Thursday at 8:30–9:00 pm on NBC: September 19, 1994 – February 23, 1995
  • Thursday at 9:30–10:00 pm on NBC: February 23 – May 18, 1995
  • Thursday at 8:00–8:30 pm on NBC: September 21, 1995 – May 6, 2004

In a wide shot, the subjects take most of the frame. The small amount of room from the top and the bottom is a ''safety room'' where your giving what the audience see's from their point of view - it would also be uncomfortable if their feet and head were exactly at the top and bottom of the frame.

The mid shot shows some parts of the subject in more detail, it usually signifies that the character has some intent information to deliver. although, this is an approximation of how you would see the person ''in flesh'' if you were to have a casual conversation with them, the audience would still feel its enough to look at the subject as a whole and still allow some hand gestures and a bit of movement within the shot.

A low angle is often shown to make something or someone powerful and dominant but in this case, the shot of the friends apartment makes it look big and luxurious making the audience to think that they are based in a big city living that city lifestyle creating what kind of people the characters are.

The target audience for friends would be a mixture of all categories because of its time slot. It brings a variety of people who works all day to students who come home to watch the show therefore, the age rate for this sit com would be 13+ leaning towards more to the girls but still have a massive boy fan base. The structure to 'Friends' is very basic and simple, it has basic camera shots, sounds and various other conventions which makes it the most popular comedy/drama show ever shown on TV.

The Graham Norton show is a British comedy chat show broadcast on BBC One. It's popular for special celebrity guests such as Tom Cruise, Michael Buble, Jennifer Lopez, Danial Radcliffe, Will Smith and Jaden Smith etc.  The multi-camera format is very basic, similar to 'friends' where the camera is set in front of the audience and facing the presenter and guest only.
The target audience for this show would be for adults aged 20+ because of it features adult content however, some teenagers enjoy watching the chat -show but majority are adults aged 20+.

Graham Norton Show Scheduling:

  • Friday: 10:35pm  - BBC ONE
  • Monday: 11:50pm - BBC ONE
  • Tuesday: 12:05am - BBC ONE (Northern Ireland)

A close up shot is used to explain the subjects expressions however, he is not looking directly at the camera therefore it tells the audience that he is talking to the interviewer. The constant feature of the shot reverse shot emphasises on the transition that one subject is looking at another subject (most of the time off-screen) and then the other subject is shown looking back at the first subject since they are facing each other, the viewers assume that they are looking at each other also an example of an eyeline match.

A wide shot and a long shot usually shows the entire object, human figure and its surroundings in relation to illustrate what is happening. It has been suggested that a long shot range is to correspond to approximately what would be the distance between the front row audience and stage in live shows. For example, the first photo displays the entire stage of the guests and presenter to show where the interview is taking place.
